Treating Ulcerative Colitis Naturally

According to the Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients (October 2004), a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of oral aloe vera gel was conducted among patients with active ulcerative colitis.

The Study Setup
Specifically, 44 patients ranging in age from 18 to 80 with mildly to moderately active ulcerative colitis were randomly assigned aloe vera gel or placebo for four weeks (the assignments were done in a 2 to 1 ratio, double blind fashion).

The aloe vera gel users were told to drink 100 milliliters twice a day for the study period, starting with between 25 and 50 milliliters for the first three days to ensure that they would not have any adverse reactions to it.

The Results
According to the study, clinical remission occurred in 30% of patients taking aloe vera and just 7% of those taking placebo. Remission or improvement occurred in nearly half (47%) of patients taking aloe vera and 14% of those taking placebo.

Comments from the Researchers
About one out of two (50%) of people who suffer from inflammatory bowel disease seek out alternative treatments. According to surveys, aloe vera is the most widely used herbal therapy among patients with this disease. Other studies have shown that aloe vera has anti-inflammatory properties. Final comments from the study: aloe vera treatment “should be considered as part of a comprehensive approach to the treatment of ulcerative colitis.”
