Human cultures have used the aloe plant for millennia, dating as far back as the 4th century BC - at least.

As mentioned, it is also commonly used to heal cuts, burns, itching due to a variety of conditions, and is effective in treating psoriasis and shingles.

Aloe has certain anti-inflammatory properties that help alleviate pain associated with these skin conditions by anesthetizing the affected skin tissue.

Although not conclusively proven, some studies have suggested that aloe vera gel can enhance the immune system. Thus the popularity of aloe vera juice and other drinks derived from the aloe plant.
