How Often Should you Exercise?
How often should you exercise? That's
a question often heard by doctors, personal trainers
and gym personnel.
But before we attempt to answer that question,
let's take a look at what that question might be
saying about the person asking the question. Turning
it on its head, what some of us might really be
saying is "I want to get into great shape but
I'm lazy so I want to do as little as possible."
But that's not an attitude worthy of your time
- if you want something you're going to have to
work your ass off to get it.
Unfortunately, we're flooded by messages from unscrupulous
- and sometimes dangerously blockheaded - salespeople
trying to get us to part with our hard earned money
in exchange for the notion that we can get fabulous
results by working out once per week, or still worse,
once per month.
But it doesn't work that way!
To see results you have to do something each and
every day. Sometimes it may not be much at all -
perhaps a stroll through the park or some visualization
exercises - but at least do something. That's not
to say taking a day off here and there (especially
when sick) is a bad thing, but keeping the momentum
going is key.
Consider the example nature has set for us: some
animals are fiercely strong, blindingly fast and
have fantastic stamina. Now we're not animals in
that sense but how many animals do you ever see
taking breaks from their daily workouts?
Sure it sounds silly - but think about it. What
nature is telling us is that good health, strength,
endurance and stamina is a lifestyle. You live it
each and every day, and it's something you "do",
or live, each and every day.
The thing about us is that - being human after
all - we tend to think of it as "exercise or
as "training." But it shouldn't be viewed
in this way. It's far more profitable to see it
as "a way of life" and what we do each
and every day adds up. A little today and a lot
tomorrow adds up to a wealth of health!
Now don't get us wrong. Planning is useful and
understanding is useful, books are useful, and sessions
with those more knowledgeable than you and more
fit than you are useful. But at some point it all
comes down getting started and making exercise a
lifelong commitment.
When in doubt listen to your body. Pay attention
to the signals its sending you and act accordingly.
So our message for today is this: learn to be a
doer and the rest will follow.
